Elon Musk’s Starlink Comes to Sri Lanka via Dhammika’s Singer

Singer (Sri Lanka) PLC, a subsidiary of Hayleys PLC, has been appointed as the official distributor for Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite internet service in Sri Lanka, marking a significant step in expanding high-speed internet access across the island.

While an official announcement is expected shortly, Singer has already signaled the development through a teaser on its verified Facebook page. The move has also been confirmed by the Starlink Sri Lanka Official Facebook page.

Singer (Sri Lanka) is 67.13% owned by Hayleys PLC, which is controlled by Sri Lankan business magnate Dhammika Perera, who holds a 51.01% stake in Hayleys. The strategic partnership positions Perera, Sri Lanka’s wealthiest individual, alongside Elon Musk in delivering next-generation internet infrastructure to the country.

Starlink is the world’s first and largest satellite constellation using a low Earth orbit to deliver broadband internet capable of supporting streaming, online gaming, video calls and more.

Most satellite internet services come from single geostationary satellites that orbit the planet at 35,786 km. As a result, the round trip data time between the user and satellite—also known as latency—is high, making it nearly impossible to support streaming, online gaming, video calls or other high data rate activities.
