3GPP recently announced that the 5G Deterministic Networking Alliance (5GDNA) has become its Market Representation Partner (MRP), making it the third organization member from 5G vertical industry after 5G Automotive Association (5GAA) and 5G Alliance for Connected Industries and Automation (5G-ACIA). This partnership shows the rise of 5GDNA’s influence in 5G standards and 5G B2B industry, which will help accelerate the utilization of 5G Deterministic Networking (5GDN) capabilities, lead the industry towards providing deterministic experience, and open up exploration of new possibilities.
3GPP is the world’s largest and most significant international standards organization for telecommunications. Its members consist of organizational partners, MRPs, and individual members, among which MRPs provide market requirements and advice regarding mobile communications services, features and functionality. 3GPP MRPs include GSMA, GSA, IPV6 Forum, 5GAA, 5G-ACIA, and TDIA.
The 5GDN leverages operators’ public network resources to build predictable, adaptable, verifiable, and deterministic dedicated mobile networks, delivering differentiated service experience and digitally transforming various industries.
5GDNA was established in June 2019 under a joint initiative by multiple operators, equipment suppliers, and industry partners. It strives to build and popularize 5G deterministic networks, forge a beneficial industry ecosystem, accelerate business growth, and advance 5G industry development. Several great industry showcases and achievements have been made off the efforts of 100 plus members from the 5GDNA. For example, its members have shown fruitful results at the 5G Application Contests held by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) of PRC in the recent two years, and have initiated a research project on 5G smart grid in 3GPP R18.
5GDNA was officially granted the MRP membership by 3GPP on October 16, 2020. The alliance will give full play to its role as a trailblazer in and a bridge between the communications industry and vertical industries, like Industrial Internet, Energy Internet, multimedia, Healthcare Internet, Smart Transportation, Smart Ports and Smart Mines. By doing so, it will advance standardization of 5G industry applications, make unique contributions to 5G industry convergence, and drive industry digitalization towards a bright future.
Jason Dai, Chairman of 5GDNA and President of Strategy & Business Development Department of Cloud Core Networks of Huawei, said: “5GDN is the cornerstone of industry digital transformation, and joining 3GPP as an MRP marks a major milestone for the development of 5GDNA. We welcome more industry partners to join us and stay committed to openness, collaboration, and shared success. Our goal is to make good use of industry precedent to verify the technical and commercial feasibility of 5GDN; formulate industry standards and policies to back up large-scale commercial use of 5GDN; and break through walls in technology, business, industry ecosystem, policies and regulations, so as to jointly usher in a successful future for the 5G industry.”
